Awareness Days

Homelessness Awareness Days & Months

Throughout the year, there are special days and observances dedicated to raising awareness about homelessness and the issues connected to it—like hunger, youth services, and remembering those we’ve lost. These moments give us opportunities to learn, reflect, and take action together as a community.

Key Awareness Days

World Homeless Day – October 10
A global day to bring attention to the needs of people experiencing homelessness and highlight ways communities can respond.
National Homeless Persons’ Remembrance Day – First Day of Winter (Winter Solstice, December 21/22)
Held on the longest night of the year to remember and honor those in the homeless community who have lost their lives.
Point-in-Time Count – Late January
Every community in the U.S. takes part in this one-night survey to count how many people are experiencing homelessness. The results help shape services, resources, and public policy.

Awareness Weeks & Months

Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week – Week before Thanksgiving (November)
A nationwide effort to bring attention to the intersections of food insecurity and homelessness.
National Homeless Youth Awareness Month – November
Dedicated to raising awareness about youth and young adult homelessness—an issue that often goes unseen.
National Homelessness Awareness Month – November
A month-long opportunity to learn more about homelessness, break down myths, and support meaningful solutions.

Related Awareness & Advocacy Dates

While not exclusively about homelessness, these observances are deeply connected and worth highlighting:

National Hunger Awareness Month (September) – Underscores the link between food insecurity and housing instability.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) – Many individuals and families experience homelessness after fleeing unsafe homes.
Mental Health Awareness Month (May) – Mental health challenges and homelessness are often connected, and breaking stigma is key to better support.
Veterans Day (November 11) – An important moment to recognize and support veterans, who are disproportionately impacted by homelessness.

How You Can Get Involved

Share these days on social media to spread awareness.
Volunteer or donate to support shelters, food programs, and housing services.
Attend local events, vigils, or educational forums.
Take time to listen to and share the stories of people with lived experience.

Together, these awareness days remind us that homelessness is not just about housing—it’s about community, dignity, and hope.
